Facebook's New Messaging System

Facebook is an internet treasure. There is no doubt about it. They were disruptive, they grew up fast and there's even a movie about their history, but they have the pressure to generate more profits, and sooner rather than later. Giving much more value to their users than they capture from them forces Facebook to constantly try new services and applications to figure out which one of them will be the next revenue stream for the company.

Facebook manages billions of messages on their platform every day. They control the communcations of more than 500 million people. They know your profile, what you like and what you dislike. Technically, they know everything about you, but they are not in the conversation. Now they want the chance to extend their advertising opportunities to your conversations, like Google does with GMail. Email's still there, and they want this piece of the pie, but to get it they are forced to reinvent or to really improve a new email / message system. But be careful, it may not work - look at Google Buzz.

Facebook still is an internet treasure but with this new challenge they will prove how disruptive they still are. If Facebook can deliver a new messaging system that combines all the elements of the today's internet communication: sms, applications, instant messaging, IP voice calling and email, they will conquer a new space where they will continue to learn about their users, improve their adverting systems and finally grow their sources of revenue. Can they do it?
