I have been a member of the Entrepreneur's Organization (EO) for many years. It is formed by fantastic group of entrepreneurs and business owners from all around the world who come together to share experiences in business and life. EO is a dynamic, global network of more than 8,000 business owners in 40 countries. Founded in 1987 by a group of young entrepreneurs, EO is the catalyst that enables entrepreneurs to learn and grow from each other, leading to greater business success and an enriched personal life. Membership in one of EO’s 120 chapters is by invitation only; the average member is 41 years old with annual revenues of US$17.3 million.
The attraction of being a member of an organization is that it makes you part of something. You belong to the culture and carry out the mission of the organization and this helps you focus on what you have to do and how to achieve it. Being a member of a group gives you the confidence to continue to be yourself; to be as you are. The catch is that it is really hard to create something disruptive when you are part of an existing something. You need to fall apart to be able to start from scratch. You need to feel the solitude and the fear of not having any points of reference to create something that matters and to innovate in one specific field. These are rules that are not written, but they exist.
When the work is done, when you have created the new thing, then other problems arise. It is time to become part of a group to understand how people in similar situations have succeeded or failed. Learning from their experiences is one of the richest things that you can get from the group. The group can help you take your new creation to next level, but never will give you the energy to create. The group is a mass of energy to move on things. But things have been to be created first outside the group.
So if you are in the process of creating something new from scratch, remember that distance could give you the right approach to discover new ways of doing things. If you are out, it is because one day you will be in again!
