The Music Business for a Band or a Singer

The music business has changed dramatically over the past two decades for a performer. Groups now have the power to connect directly to people through the digital era without having to beg to managers, promoters or record labels. If people like your music, you have got it. You can have a band, create your music, distribute it and earn money from it. Fans will be there to push your musical career to the next level, looking for the right manager, producer, record label, etc. But the first step to get into the music business as an artist has totally changed: you have now the power to amplify your music with digital tools.

But how is the internet changing the next steps into the music business? How are bands, singers, managers, record labels, etc. changing the rules of the game using all the power that internet and social media are bringing to the music ecosystem?

From ticket sales to live concerts streamed by video, there are many new ways to engage with fans and drive more sales. Even if piracy has damaged a big proportion of the music business in the past decade, platforms like iTunes or Spotify have contributed to satisfying the needs of fans to buy online music everywhere and at anytime. The piracy problem seems to be solved and the moment the music business can realize the benefits of internet is just around the corner.

The big changes will come in the following years when bands will need to broadcast their tours and even part of their lives to keep their fans and audience engaged. Music will face a disruption changing the principles of its business into a online media business. Twitter is just the first instance of this, but in the coming years we will see how bands create media content showing what they are doing, playing, working on or just hanging out!

This will be the next impact that internet has on the music business for bands and singers. You can image that not all artists will want to play this game, but the pressure from the business will be there. Disney has understood this for years, but has just broadcast the imaginary lives of their artists, not their true lives. The model has been tested, now there is only one step left: move from the video clip to the online band media channel. The show must go on!
